Of course he is speaking from the perspective of science but he, more than almost anyone else, is willing and able to pierce through the limitations of science.
So in this talk he demonstrates why mathematical induction logic is limited. I had sent a letter making this same claim to the Kaplans married couple that crank out "popular" math books. haha.
And the 2nd big point of Penrose is that relativity and quantum physics (as currently constructed) are inherently incompatible - due to the equivalence principle in relativity. As he emphasizes, this is something that is not recognized by most physicists.
As for what this means for consciousness - well then he gets into the connection to Stuart Hameroff and microtubules - Penrose goes so far as to discuss details of the Indian physicist in Japan doing the quantum nanotech - saying he can't pronounce his full name. Yes I have corresponded with that scientist as well as with Hameroff.
What is truly fascinating about Penrose is that "mainstream" science can not accept his view of reality - despite the fact that his credentials are indisputable!
But I didn't realize that professor Basil Hiley - again with whom I corresponded - actually convinced Penrose to spell his model as Twistor (not Twister). haha. And Hiley and Bohm and Penrose had deep discussions in the early 1960s.
So both Hiley and Penrose emphasize, now, the non-commutative foundation of reality as a process of consciousness.
Philip Ball gives an overview of Penrose's career, but keep in my that Nobel laureate Brian Josephson had to write a corrective to Ball's description of another scientist.
And I've corresponded with Nobel Laureate Brian Josephson as well.
Philip Ball claims that the "biophysics are unconvincing" about the microtubules but he doesn't mention that again the recent research has proven that ultrasound has the largest amplitude of resonating the microtubules. Penrose describes this research in the above lecture I linked.
But we know from Brian Josephson critiquing Philip Ball for his not accurate depiction of cold fusion research, that Brian Josephson also is willing to consider the paranormal possibilities of quantum consciousness, connected to cold fusion as well.
So clearly Philip Ball is not willing to "go there" along with most of science. And so most scientists quickly dismiss these topics as "woo-woo" and New Age cranks, etc. but neglect to mention that the most hard-core serious scientists like Roger Penrose don't dismiss these possibilities at all!
So here is another somewhat condescending rendition of the Hameroff-Penrose collaboration without any real indepth analysis of its feasibility - still you get some interesting "behind the scenes" discussion.
Roger Penrose Discusses Consciousness
May 4, 2017 - Roger Penrose On Why Consciousness Does Not Compute ... Hameroff suggests that microtubules are the quantum device that Penrose had been .... Steve Paulson is the executive producer of Wisconsin Public Radio's ...nautil.us/issue/.../consciousness/roger-penrose-on-why-consciousness-does-not-compu...
The other big point that Penrose emphasizes is that time is inherently asymmetrical and this has huge implications for understanding the Universe as a whole.
What I find fascinating is that for all the far reaching analysis of Penrose, he doesn't include the ecological crisis. But then I guess I am asking too much. haha.
O.K. so that Hameroff Consciousness Conference already happened - this June, and Noam Chomsky was there with Roger Penrose!
They are about the same age - in their mid-80s.
Oh yeah Elaine Chew, the musician-neuroscientist was there as well.
I blogged on Ivette Fuentes also and she was invited by Roger Penrose!
