So here's the sad thing. So Neil DeGrasse Tyson tells - or shud I say "schools" (cuz poor Katy was Bible-Schooled right?) that Math is the Language of the Universe!!
Wow!! Or so Katy responds as she is supposed to. (No God is not the language of the Universe Katy - just so you know - science is now the religion of the Universe). haha. Hilarious.
No mention of how Math just happened to destroy life on Earth faster than any previous destruction of life on Earth in Earth's 3.8 billion years (or whatever)....
And so then we go back to Charles Liu - who, upon googling - we find -
Astrophysicist Charles Liu of the American Museum of Natural History explains what the summer solstice is andSo what does Charles Liu say - math was developed before human language even based on pictographs! (well I think he meant before human writing).
Then the joke is that comedy has math and baseball has math and so math is just the "intuitive" truth of the Universe!
And so then Neil drops the bomb by telling us who this pop superstar is:
Katy Perry might know more math than she realizes! Why?
Charles Liu definitely responds: I think so.
Charles Liu starts off making the point that it was only with the Greeks that math was done "as its own thing" - as its own language.
But Charles Liu neglects to point out a very critical historical fact - that Greek math originated from music theory! Math Professor Luigi Borzacchini has detailed this in his 2007 academic essay: Read in full here
And Boom! A NEW Borzacchini music-math paper!
Such a dislocation explains the profound reasons for which the old connection between Muses and Science vanished in modern times, when musical harmony suddenly moved from the Scholastic Quadrivium to the Realm of Beauty, in perhaps the most astonishing turnaround in the history of human culture. This also hints at the role musical education could play in framing human cognition between the manipulation of signs and holistic perception.Read in full here
O.k. this should be awesome.
And so math is the foundation of what we think of as music?!That's a Neil deGrasse Tyson quote from the katy Perry episode and he's wrong - it's the opposite!
Charles Liu response: Absolutely!
Wrong. haha.
